Happy Holidays!

Winter is upon us. It is 20 ºF (-6 ºC) this morning, and should get to 45 ºF (7 ºC) by midday, with possibilities of snow. The golden vines of the fall, are but a memory now. A vineyard with golden-yellow leaves in late autumn, with a farmhouse in the distant background.

The air sparkles each crisp morning, as I walk my frisky dogs between the frost covered vines. Rows of dormant grapevines covered in frost extending into the distance on a crisp winter morning, creating a sparkling landscape.

Meanwhile, we are busy trimming off the old wood. The cane pruning system widely used in Bordeaux’s narrowly spaced vineyards is named after Dr. Jules Guyot, a French scientist and agronomist born in 1807.

We have two methods of pruning depending on the vine: in Double Guyot, we tie down one shoot to the left and one to the right along the lowest wire, and in Single Guyot, we tie down one single shoot along the lowest wire. Obviously we are not to the tying down stage yet.

As the work continues, everyone is speaking of their holiday plans. We wish you all a joyful Christmas and a healthy wonderful new year!
